Suicide is an ugly trend that has permeated the different strata of human society. It is a social menace that has now assumed a dangerous and worrisome global dimension. It cuts across continents, nations, races, languages, religions, and so many strata of life. The rich and the poor, high and low, weak and mighty, celebrities and non-celebrities, the learned and the unlearned, the working class and the jobless, young and old, whites and blacks are committing it. Many have become victims of this menacing societal monster. It is pure suicide. Suicide means killing oneself or taking one’s life for whatever reason.
Suicide for whatever reason it is being committed is abhorred with so much disdain in so many communities. In fact, it is taboo in our society. Our cultures forbid it, our religions forbid it, and even GOD himself frowns at it. Even the law of life abhors suicide because it involves the taking of a life that is very sacrosanct. Life is sacrosanct and must not be wasted or cut short no matter the reason adduced for it. Hence, we must be wary of this social menace.
From every angle you want to look at it, our society is at the receiving end. It smacks of economic sabotage; no society ever develops economically when citizens of the productive age snuff their lives at their prime. These are people who would have contributed to the productivity and progress of our society. This social vice called suicide is an ill-fated wind that blows no one any good.
The way this menace is spreading like wildfire leaves one dumbfounded and flabbergasted. It has become so common these days that anyone who is dissatisfied with life will contemplate suicide. Now, can we ask ourselves this simple question, how can something that was so mute and unheard of in time past suddenly assume such an alarming global dimension? It has become so rampant that each passing day there are reports of suicide globally.
The news and social media are awash and inundated with suicide stories of people that have killed themselves. And the number keeps on increasing exponentially every day. While some prefer to jump into lagoons, others prefer to take over a dose of medication, slit their throat or wrist, hang themselves, or lace their drinks with poison – please do not try these. Whatever method one chose to do it, there is only one sinister motive for suicide, and that is the taking of one’s life.
In this post, we are critically going to examine the various reasons why people commit suicide. And I will also be exploring the reasons why it is on the increase and is fast becoming a social menace of worrisome global dimension. I will also look at how we can curtail this ugly trend and reduce it to the barest minimum. It will help us in the fight against suicide which has become a dangerous threat to human existence. We must say ‘no’ to suicide.
Unfulfilment the Hotbed of Suicide
An unfulfilled life is an unsatisfactory lifestyle that is enmeshed in unhappiness. This happens when the result we get in life falls below or does not meet our expectations. Hence we tend to be unhappy and not satisfied in life when we fail to succeed and impact the lives of people around us. Unfulfillment results in a low-quality life, where one chooses to live below his or her dream life. It is a situation where you do not derive happiness or satisfaction with the kind of life you live. In other words, we always lack happiness and satisfaction when we lack fulfillment. Any life that lacks fulfillment is a hotbed of suicide.
At this stage, life will become brute, meaningless, unfair, and one inconsequential piece of junk. Let me chip in here that an unfilled life is a gateway to suicide. This is because it opens up the door to some of the vices which if not well managed could lead to one contemplating suicide option. I shall explore some of these vices which are manifest in an unfulfilled life and how they can lead to suicide. And if we want to nip this malaise called suicide from the bud we must watch out for these vices. Obviously, we can win the fight against suicide if we can bravely handle them.
WATCH OUT FOR MORE ON SUICIDE…
